Sleep deprivation during a low calorie diet can result in reduced fat loss, and increased muscle loss. In the study discussed, subjects lost 6.6 pounds of bodyweight in 14 days following a lower calorie diet and sleeping only 5.5 hours per night, but of that 6.6 pounds lost, 75% was muscle.
